KIWANIS ONE DAY. The project will be held at Casa Boricua, 204 Colony Street in Meriden, from 9 AM until noon. Casa Boricua is a non-profit agency which serves disadvantaged members of Meriden's Latino community with case management, translation, educational and employment resources, referrals to health and legal assistance, and access to an onsite computer lab. The agency serves a tremendous number of children and adults every year and depends upon the support of service organizations like ours to help and provide assistance. The work will take place outdoors -- lawn mowing, weeding in the flowerbeds, removing dandelions, pruning a large rhododendron, raking, removing tree branches from the ground, picking up trash. There is also an entryway (like a small enclosed porch) that needs to be scraped and painted. Anyone participating should wear appropriate clothing (long pants are recommended, gardening-type gloves, hat, closed shoes) and wear sunscreen and/or bug repellent. If you have simple gardening tools, please bring them along with you. Drinking water will be provided. Kathy Clements, an RN, will be our speaker this Thursday. She was an RN at Mid-state for 30 years. She will be presenting on her missionary work to Haiti through Bethesda Evangelical Mission, run by a minister in Meriden. They see 200 patients per day (yes per day)!

Speaker: Kathryn Orzech - author Kathy was born and raised in Meriden, where she attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School and Francis T. Maloney High School. She attended Paier School of Art in Hamden and has also taken eclectic courses at Middlesex Community College. Kathy has published Asylum, a dark suspense saga, spanning four generations of family drama, secrets and betrayals. On line since 1997, her website, Dreamwatch.com, a site dedicated to true paranormal experiences of ordinary people, inspired the plot for her contemporary psychic thriller, Premonition of Terror, when she wondered: "What if premonitions from around the world predicted the same catastrophe? If only you knew about it, who would YOU tell? If no one believed, how far would YOU go to stop it?" This idea stemmed from our club's sponsorship of an "Educational Empowerment Forum" held on October 15th where a candid conversation was held about substance use in Meriden, especially affecting the youth in our community. David Lowell has a great deal of knowledge on this subject and will be an excellent speaker.

Jesse McCord Lewis, Scarlett’s son, was one of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Ms. Lewis will speak about the Foundation, its mission and programs. She will also discuss Buddy Benches, a program to install benches in school playgrounds designated as a place where kids sit when they feel lonely, signaling other kids to ask them to play.

There are two Kiwanians being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year: Maureen Bilger a former Member and President of the Meriden Kiwanis Club and current member of the Tri-Town Golden K, (in the category of Community Service) and Dr. Charles T. Flynn Jr., a former Member of the Meriden Kiwanis Club, (in the category of Science/Medicine). Please come out to support these fine individuals being honored and take part in a Meriden Tradition. Musical entertainment will be provided by Denise Jones & Inner Groove. Refreshments will follow the ceremony. The event is open to the community and there is no cost to attend.

Meeting to work on a video montage of iconic Kapers skits and acts from past shows to play during a medley Joan Kilby is singing this year. We will review old Kapers programs and decide on skits we should feature. There will be a team of us tracking down these skits on DVD and VHS while you meet. Guest Speaker: Clayton Jason has been the Major Gifts Officer at Operation Fuel since January 2016. Operation Fuel is Connecticut’s only statewide non-profit energy assistance program. Operation Fuel partners with local government and community-based organizations at more than 100 sites throughout Connecticut to ensure that families in need have access to year-round energy assistance.

Kiwanis Family Souper Bowl, a citywide food drive to support the Meriden Soup Kitchen. The Community Projects Committee has scheduled a hands-on service project at the Chrysalis Transition House. We will meet off-site at 11am (at a location TBA) to discuss the work of Chrysalis and the confidentiality of working at their safe house. We will then proceed to the facility. Short meeting followed by a St. Patrick's Day social. Members are asked to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We will also be holding a "brown bag auction" as an administrative fundraiser for the club. If you wish to participate, bring a $5 item (St. Patrick themed, if you wish) in a brown paper bag. Doreen Roddy will be auctioning off the items in her usual comedic fashion to raise funds for our administrative budget. Should be a fun evening!

Kiwanis Club of Meriden Annual Education Awards Dinner. 6:00 Meet and Greet Dinner at about 7:00. $23.50 per person - buffet dinner. PLEASE Sign-up if you have not done it already. 3rd Annual Kiwanis Family Night -- Join fellow servant leaders from across Meriden as we celebrate OUR SLP “ALL-STARS” and the outstanding service all our SLP clubs do for the community.
